Abstract

PROBLEM: Post-COVID-19 Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome (MIS-C/PIMS), is a recently emerged entity characterized by high levels of inflammation in pediatric patients. There is limited current national literature on its presentation in pediatrics. OBJECTIVE: Describe the clinical characteristics of pediatric patients with MIS-C/PIMS. METHOD: A

descriptive retrospective cross-sectional study involving the review of 30 medical records of patients aged 0 to 17 years with MIS-C/PIMS admitted to the pediatric department of  a private hospital from January 2021 to December 2022.RESULTS: Among the 30 medical records, the most frequent clinical characteristics observed were fever in 93%, dermatological findings of exanthema in 40%, vomiting in 30%, conjunctival injection in 27%, abdominal pain in 17%, and respiratory symptoms like runny nose and cough in 17%. 53% of the patients were male, and 66% (20 patients) were from the urban area of Guatemala City. CONCLUSION: Most MIS-C patients were male, aged between 7 months and 5 years, and primarily from the urban area of Guatemala City. The main clinical manifestations included fever, exanthema, and vomiting. The most relevant laboratory findings were elevated inflammatory markers. The main associated complications were pericardial effusion and pericarditis, and the therapeutic approach involved glucocorticoids, immunoglobulins, and antithrombotics.
